Summer\'s (More or Less) Out. School\'s In.

By THE NEW YORK TIMES

Today is the first day of school for New York City's 1.1 million public school students, virtually all of whom will encounter at least one significant change this year. Teachers are beginning to roll out the new common core curriculum, a set of standards that emphasize more critical thinking and nonfiction reading.

With few exceptions, schools are expected to enroll and accommodate most special education students, rather than send them to separate schools that may be far from their homes. And school lunches have been revamped to meet new federal guidelines for nutrient and caloric content.

Throughout the day, City Room will post dispatches from schools around the city.
