Dear Diary:
My daughter Melissa and some of her 8-year-old friends attended a musical theater class on the Upper West Side in the 1980s. The show, an adaptation of âA Chorus Line,â was only a week away and we were hoping to hear, when we went to pick them up, that they had had a successful rehearsal. We heard that they had, even though the piano player had called in sick and they had to use a substitute.
Peeking into the auditorium, we saw Marvin Hamlisch, the substitute.
We knew that his girlfriend's daughters were in the play, but we had never seen him at a rehearsal.
Driving home and still excited by the events of the day, one of the girls remarked, âThe man who played the piano today was much better than our regular guy.â
Marvin, thanks for the memory.
