Dear Diary:
My daughter Melissa and some of her 8-year-old friends attended a musical theater class on the Upper West Side in the 1980s. The show, an adaptation of “A Chorus Line,†was only a week away and we were hoping to hear, when we went to pick them up, that they had had a successful rehearsal. We heard that they had, even though the piano player had called in sick and they had to use a substitute.
Peeking into the auditorium, we saw Marvin Hamlisch, the substitute.
We knew that his girlfriend's daughters were in the play, but we had never seen him at a rehearsal.
Driving home and still excited by the events of the day, one of the girls remarked, “The man who played the piano today was much better than our regular guy.â€
Marvin, thanks for the memory.
