Still Fighting the War, in an Orchard

By CAROLE KLEIN

Dear Diary:

Now that I have moved to Washington, south of the Mason-Dixon line, I realize how much of a New Yorker I really am.

At the end of a lovely summer car ride into the Virginia wine country, we stopped at a peach orchard in Markham, Va., on our way back to the District of Columbia. After we picked our peaches, we went up to the stand to pay and also to buy a peck of the first apples of the season (Galas).

When my husband inquired if there would be Macoun apples later in the fall, I said, “It's too warm to grow them here.” The owner of the stand agreed with my comment by stating, “We don't grow any Yankee apples here.”

I think I'll book a train ride to the north to make sure I have my annual supply of Macoun apples for the fall.
