The Staten Island borough president, James P. Molinaro, waded hip-deep into the culture wars this week, calling Lady Gaga a âslutâ as he excoriated her for âglorifying drug use.â
Mr. Molinaro made his remarks on Monday at the kickoff of an anti-drug-abuse program.
The Staten Island Advance reported that Mr. Molinaro displayed a poster of Lady Gaga, a 26-year-old native of the Upper West Side, smoking marijuana onstage in Amsterdam last week and told his audience:
We have to understand that there's a tremendous influence with our youth, which I didn't have as a youth. And there's the influence right there. Stop glorifying the drug use. There's Gaga. Here's this ⦠this ⦠I would call her a slut. This slut is influencing many, many children.
A spokeswoman for Mr. Molinaro was not immediately able to say on Tuesday whether he called Lady Gaga the name because of her public use of marijuana or for a different reason.
Drug abuse is a deeply personal subject for Mr. Molinaro: he lost a son to an overdose in 2006. âI remember many days my son crying in my arms - âHelp me,'â he told the audience on Monday, stressing the urgency of alerting parents to the dangers of drugs.
Lady Gaga's publicist did not immediately respond to a request for comment from her.
