Across the Nation, Politicians Speak About 9/11

By MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT

Perhaps more than any other day during the year, the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks elicits dozens of comments from politicians about the same issue. Below is a small sample of statements released Tuesday:

“When the history books are written, the true legacy of 9/11 will not be one of fear or hate or division. It will be a safer world; a stronger nation; and a people more united than ever before.” â€" President Obama

“On this most somber day, those who would attack us should know that we are united, one nation under God, in our determination to stop them and to stand tall for peace and freedom at home and across the world.” - Mitt Romney, Republican candidate for President and former Massachusetts governor

“It is a day to give honor to those in our military who have sacrificed so much, including their lives, for the same end. Their courage and heroism and willingness to answer the call of duty have kept America safe and strong and free. We are truly the home of the brave.” - Representative Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin, Republican candidate for vice president

“On this day, we honor the memories and the lives of those who were killed and the families who will never forget them. We also honor the first responders who bravely put themselves in harm's way â€" many of whom never returned home. It is also our obligation and our duty to make sure that we will always remember.” â€" Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York

“While our Homeland is more secure today than it was 11 years ago, the terror threat remains… Continued vigilance by all of us is as important as ever.” - Representative Peter T. King, Republican of New York and chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security
