Suspect Sought in Shooting of Police Sergeant

By DANIEL KRIEGER

The police on Thursday released the name and a photo of the man being sought, they say, for shooting a police sergeant in both legs during a pursuit in Queens on Wednesday night.

The suspect, John Thomas, 24, shot Sgt. Craig Bier, 44, on Union Hall Street in Jamaica, the police said, after Sergeant Bier and his partner tried to stop him and he fled. A Ruger nine-millimeter pistol was recovered nearby, the police said.

Sergeant Bier, the 10th officer shot this year, underwent surgery on Thursday and was in stable condition, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said.

Mr. Thomas is 5 feet 11, weighs about 180 pounds and has long hair.

“We very much want to talk to him,” Mr. Kelly said.
