A Queens cemetery dating back to the 18th century was declared a landmark by the city on Tuesday: Brinckerhoff Cemetery in Fresh Meadows, a private burial ground that was used from 1730 to 1872. There are no gravestones or markers still visible on the site, located along 182nd Street, but according to a survey, there had been 77 gravestones and markers there.
The cemetery was used by Dutch farm families in the area, including Brinckerhoffs, Hooglands and Ryersons.
âThis cemetery, despite all of the changes that have occurred around it, remains one of a handful of sites that directly ties New York City to its earliest days as a Dutch settlement,â the Landmarks Preservation Commission's chairman, Robert B. Tierney, said in a statement.
The cemetery had been facing possible development, and preservationists fought hard to preserve it.
