There will be yoga. And a zip line. And a fire hydrant sprinkler. And to accommodate such summer exploits, there will be no traffic on much of Park Avenue for the next three Saturday mornings.
On Saturday, the city begins its annual stretch of Summer Streets weekends, staging a series of outdoor activities from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park. Traffic on parts of Park Avenue, to 72nd Street, and Lafayette Street will close beginning at 6 a.m. Saturday and reopen at 1:30 p.m. Several streets intersecting the Summer Streets route will remain open to traffic, including 14th Street, 23rd Street, 42nd Street and 59th Street.
âSummer Streets gives New Yorkers an all-access pass to seven miles of open, car-free space to walk, run, ride bikes and play,â Janette Sadik-Khan, the city's transportation commissioner, said in a statement. âFrom zip lines to rock climbs, and dozens of other healthy, free activities, Ne w Yorkers can reach new heights of fun on the first three Saturdays in August.â
The event will also feature temporary public art, free exercise and dance classes, and a free helmet giveaway. At East 51st Street, as part of a safety initiative, visitors will be able to get behind the wheel of a truck to see traffic from a truck driver's vantage point. A 160-foot-long zip line will hang at Foley Square in Lower Manhattan, near Duane and Worth Streets.
